The most common issue that artists face is money. Basically, we have the right ideas, but lacks the funds to create it. However, we believe it is part of being a "starving artist". We have an illusion that being broke now can lead to success in the long-term. We fail to realize that greater success could be obtain through educating oneself (meaning having a back-up plan could prove to be essential). For an example, Leonardo Di Vinci was (and still is) a famous artist (duh common sense). He not only use his knowledge in mathematics, but revolutionize the world with methods by applying it to his art. In addition, I assume that Leonardo also use his inventions to support his art. (I am not a historian, so do not take this as a fact rather an opinion.)
It is not necessary to be broke to follow your dreams. As a strong believer in God, I know we all have missions to fulfill. But, artists should not have to live under a bridge listening to loud cars passing above them to support their dream. Artists can be doctors, lawyers, engineers, ITs even accountants. They should be able to have the ability to buy art materials and provide needed necessities for their survival. In summary, a person should not have to struggle financially throughout their art career. One should look at many opportunities before labeling themselves as a “starving artist.” Perhaps the terms should be turn into “successful artist.”
