I am not here to tell you how to
make money. (If you find out, let me know). But, I hope to encourage many
struggling artists to realize their not alone. Every artists experience a dry
spell. It is a period when customers are not buying their works. This phase can
last for weeks, months or even years. For instances, there was a time when one
painting took me two years to sell. This resulted in my inexperience in selling
art. Now, I sell at least one painting every year. It is not a too significant,
but it is better than previous years (previous years=none).
Many artists become discourage when
they are not quickly selling their work. We all experiences a desire of wanting
something done at a particular moment. An example, is when my second oldest sister
wants candy from the store. We first argue about going to the store. Then, she
bribes me with peanuts. And, like always I give into her desire of wanting
candy. This is the same for artists. As soon as we post our work on Etsy or
Ebay, we “expect” our painting to sell within that week. This builds our
expectation too high only to be let down if do not sell within our expected
timeframe.
Artists should try to remain positive
during a dry spell. The worst thing many artists can do is become discourage
from lacking in sales. Discouragement can lead to desperation. People can sense a desperate seller. Furthermore,
giving a desperate vibe can turn people off, thus discouraging a buyer. In
conclusion, art should about the experiences of learning and overcoming obstacles.
This helps artists to establish their own identity. Struggling builds character
and strength that translate into their work. Perhaps, those are characteristics
that makes artists become artists.
